Financial Peace University

Tomorrow night at 5:00 I am going to my first Financial Peace University (FPU) class. I am so excited, because I think this will be the support system I need to get through the next season of my financial life. If you don't know what FPU is, I plan on getting into that later on. For now, I just want to share my background with Dave.

How I came to know Dave:

On a  summer trip during college I met a family I came to highly respect. The wife showed me her wallet and it was full of envelopes that were filled with cash. I was curious about the envelopes and long story short she told me they were part of a system set up by a man named Dave Ramsey. I was very interested, but I didn't feel my life at the time warranted looking much further into the system. Two years later I was at the library and I saw the book The Total Money Makeover on the shelf and recognized the author as Dave Ramsey.

After reading the book I was hooked on Dave, but not quite ready to drink the kool-aid. I was finished with college and had the $57,000+ in student loan debt, but chose to give myself a free two year pass and join the Peace Corps.

The entire time I was in Peace Corps I read personal finance blogs and made plans to pay back my debts in a big way when the two years were up. I also started talking to my mom about money more often. She was in a new financial situation and I thought she would benefit from going to a Financial Peace University class. I made a deal with my mom that I would pay for her to go to class if one day she would pay for me to go to the class. My time has come.

When you sign up for the class you get a box full of finance goodies and I couldn't wait for my box to arrive. Dave thought of everything, I have a workbook, some DVDs and there is even a pencil, eraser, and pencil sharpener included. I am all set up and ready for my class. I can't wait to talk finance with the rest of the group.

I want to know: Have you taken an FPU or other finance class? How did it go?
